Basic Website SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is the process to get your website to rank higher in the results given by search engines. The reason this is important is people using search engines usually only click on the first results when searching for a topic. Below, I will explain the different techniques to accomplish basic SEO on your landscape architect or roof inspector business website.

A number of the techniques involve adding special code to the HTML of your website. These are called tags.

The page title tag is what is the title of the website page.  The title of your website page should be an accurate and concise description of the website page’s content.  The title tag is used as the clickable element of your website in the search engine result page.  It should be between 50 and 60 characters so it is completely visible.

The URL is the website page address.  This will also show on the search engine result page.  It can be the same as the title but could be different.  It should contain words that describe the website page.

The content is the what the website page is about.  It should be unique compared to other web pages on your website.  It should fully explain the topic and address a topic someone is interested in.

The meta description tag is a special tag that is not seen on the website page.  But the search engine results page shows the meta description below the title and URL.  It is a great place for a summary of the website page.  It should be between 50 and 160 characters.

Image alt tags allow text to be linked to images.  Search engines traditionally are only able to look at the text content of a website page.  They cannot “see” images.

Every website page should be thought of how it relates to SEO.  A web page should communicate information to the person reading it.  But that same information needs to be understood by the search engines so the web page can be found by people looking for that information on a search engine.  Both purposes re-enforce each other on your landscape architect or roof inspector business website.
